Decline in Autopsies for Deaths Attributed to Cerebrovascular Disease Douglas
نویسنده
چکیده
Background and Purpose: United States national autopsy rates have declined in recent years. In the present study, changes in autopsy rates for deaths due to stroke are examined and compared with changes in autopsy rates for all deaths. Methods: National Center for Health Statistics data on United States national autopsy rates were examined for the years 1955, 1958, and 1972-1988. Results: Since at least 1955, nonstroke deaths were more than twice as likely to be autopsied as deaths due to cerebrovascular disease. The annual autopsy frequency for all deaths, for deaths due to stroke, and for deaths due to each stroke subtype declined precipitously after 1972. Since 1982, less than 5 percent of deaths attributed to stroke have been documented by autopsy. Information obtained at autopsy was frequently ignored in the determination of cause of death on the death certificate. Conclusions: Careful consideration of the value of autopsy for education, research, and quality assurance is urgently needed. Unless the present problems in obtaining, processing, disseminating, and using autopsy data are adequately addressed, the autopsy rate will continue to decline. (Stroke 1993;24:71-75)

Introduction: The elderly represent a significant proportion of the populace and their mortality index is of public health significance. With dearth of vital registration, in-hospital based studies remains a desirable alternative. This study hopes to determine the epidemiologic pattern of elderly mortality with respect to sex, age, date and cause of death. Methods: This is descriptive retrosp...

At the middle of the 20th century, autopsy has a fundamental role in medical education in Iran, guided by the influential Oslerian philosophy “as is your pathology so is your medical practice”. Students not only attended autopsies, but also had learnt to conduct them. In contrast, today the use of autopsy in medical education is falling down to death. Although this falling is worldwide, but the...
متن کاملNon-Communicable Disease Mortality among a Sample of Older People in Iran from 2007 to 2018
Introduction: Increasing age is one of the most important predictors of mortality among aged population. Therefore, determining the causes of death among older people could be imperative. The purpose of this study was to investigate non-communicable disease mortality among a sample of older people in Iran from 2007 to 2018. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study that applied censu...
متن کاملThe decline of the hospital autopsy: a safety and quality issue for healthcare in Australia.
Even with new diagnostic modalities, autopsy remains an important tool for quality and safety assurance. A systematic review of reports from 1996 to 2002 found autopsies detected, on average, 23.5% of clinically missed diagnoses involving the principal or underlying cause of death, and 9% of errors that would or could have affected the patient's outcome. We surveyed pathology laboratories and h...
